As part of the Annual Conference and Expo 2022 of the Institute for Industrial & Systems Engineers (IISE), the student Valeria Soledad Pérez Martínez from the Department of Engineering in Industrial Systems and Technologies (ISTI) of the Polytechnic University of San Luis Potosí (UPSLP) won second place in the technical essay competition for engineering students with an essay entitled “Standardization of the Continuous Improvement Program”. This competition recognizes outstanding essays in the field of research and practices related to Industrial Engineering at an international level.
The Annual Conference and Expo 2022 was held in the city of Seattle, Washington, from May 20th to 24th of this year and was aimed at undergraduate, master’s and doctoral students in the area of Industrial and Systems Engineering as well as researchers, academics and professionals with a connection to the IISE.
Valeria took second place, coming within a few points of University of Pittsburgh student Ayushi Gupti, who took the top spot. The competition included the participation of students from prestigious universities in the United States such as Clemson University, Oklahoma State University, Mississippi State University and Harvey Mudd College, in the state of California, whose engineering program is ranked second in the United States. These institutions are representatives of various regions in the United States and in the world and hold regional competitions to qualify for international competition.
Importantly, in last year’s edition, Valeria won first place in the “Best Student Article” category in the Operational Excellence Division Competition. Both in this edition and in the past, she was advised by Rogelio Portillo Rosales, faculty from the department. Similarly, in 2021, she was awarded the Exemplary Student Medal awarded by the Trajectory of Success Foundation in San Luis Potosí.
It is worth mentioning that the IISE is an international organization based in Atlanta, Georgia, in the United States of America, and whose objective is to promote the knowledge and application of Industrial Engineering. It is made up of student and professional chapters at an international level, bringing together more than 5,000 members from 30 countries. In Mexico there are more than 32 student chapters hosted at institutes of higher education, both public and private. The Polytechnic University of San Luis Potosí has been part of the IISE since October 2009.
The students from the Department of Engineering in Industrial Systems and Technologies have participated in the Annual International Conference for eight consecutive years and have managed to obtain a second and a third place in the International Student Technical Essay Competition, in 2022 and 2014 respectively; first place in the “Best Student Article” category of the Operational Excellence Division in 2021; and two second places in the same category in 2015 and 2016.
